Chief Investment Officer Jonathan Shiffer joined EQIS in 2018 and has 25 years of investment management experience.
We caught up with Jonathan to find out more about him and how his work is so important to advisors and their clients.
Describe your day-to-day here at EQIS.
As CIO I oversee all aspects of investments on the platform, which includes capital market and economic analysis, due diligence on our managers, and designing, building and managing the EQIS models and managed portfolios. My day usually starts early with the close and evaluation of international markets and continues through the final bells on Wall Street. I think about portfolio management and helping advisors navigate and implement investment options.
Tell us more about our investment manager partners.
When it comes to considering investment managers and their various model strategies, EQIS demands consistency, clarity and persistency. We review the parent organization, the investment team and the investment process to find strategies that have the highest chance to generate consistently above-average returns. It is important to understand each manager’s investment strategies, allocations and decision-making processes so that when properly blended into a portfolio advisors and their clients are not surprised.
What do you love most about your job?
Being a student and constantly learning from the ever-changing world is one of my favorite aspects. Also, to have concrete and measurable feedback on our decisions. The market always confirms or denies my thoughts and decisions, and I really enjoy working in an environment like that.
What is your most often-asked question?
What does the future hold for us? Of course, we usually have strong opinions, but they change with the facts, and fortunately the investment world is always offering new data and facts to shape, reshape and guide our outlooks.
What is one interesting fact that no one knows about you?
I am an outdoorsman and take conservation seriously, so much so that I raise my own chickens and produce my own compost. Taking care of our environment helps me maintain my playgrounds out there.
What is the best advice you ever received?
That one is easy. People often fret about being successful, but someone once told me that if you take care of your business, your people and your clients, then success will naturally follow, don’t put the cart before the horse.
