Information Technology Manager Henry Kuo started at EQIS in 2018 as a part-time desktop support analyst and took over the manager role in 2021. As he puts it, “I like to think of myself as the long arm of EQIS cyber security and concierge for anything technology related.”
We caught up with Henry to find out more about him and how his work is important to helping advisors.
Describe your day-to-day role here at EQIS.
I always start my day on my stationary bike checking email and the news. It helps keep me sharp and helps me set my priorities for the day. From there, every day is different, and I love it!
Although we have an exceptional suite of security software and tools, I mostly attribute our top-notch security to our well-trained employees at EQIS. On top of frequent ongoing IT training, everyone knows they can reach me anywhere at any time for anything. I have both eyes and ears trained on any possible security concerns and I’m dedicated to customer service to all here at EQIS.
How does your work directly/indirectly impact our advisors?
If EQIS employees are technologically happy, then they have the tools they need to make our advisors happy. By being open and available to all at EQIS I keep the pulse and can anticipate our technology needs.
What is your most often-asked question?
"How do I __________?" I always love it when someone asks questions. It means that they want to learn something and put a new tool in their belt. More importantly, if it is something new to me, then we both get to learn something new!
What do you love most about your job?
Technology can be so polarizing but I absolutely love seeing technology work for people. I find real purpose when seeing others succeed because of my efforts. I also enjoy knowing that everyone can come to me with “dumb questions.” Every question is a learning opportunity, and any question security related boosts our security posture.
What is one interesting fact that no one knows about you?
I got my first and only detention during middle school by hacking into the school’s network. I was able to see all sorts of stuff but in the middle of this adventure I got a huge sense of guilt and confessed to the vice principal. For “punishment” I was made to secure the wireless network and computers during detention. I find it interesting how my parents were never told about this "detention" and that I easily made honor roll the rest of middle school, got free lunch passes and keys to the teacher’s lounge!
I am also a CPR-certified PADI rescue diver and was a lifeguard at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas California.
What is the best advice you ever received?
Keep it simple, be helpful and think two steps ahead.
