Keeping you informed on the markets, trends and how Freedom Advisors is serving you.
Senior Vice President and Business Consultant Steven Simerka joined EQIS in 2014. We caught up with Steven to find out more about him and how he helps advisors.
Describe your day-to-day work here at EQIS.
I help advisors free up time by reducing the time they have to spend on economic, market and manager research that drives portfolio construction so they can invest that time advising clients and building their practice.
What do you love most about your job?
The satisfaction that comes from knowing we can help advisors and their clients lead more prosperous lives. It’s a privilege to earn the role of being a research and communication resource for advisors. Managing the money prudently is essential but you need to combine that with easy-to-understand and consistent messaging to manage the most difficult piece of the puzzle which is the mindset of the client. I absolutely love the personal and professional relationships developed with advisors and the challenge we face together due to daily changes in markets.
What is your most often-asked question?
Where do you think inflation, interest rates, the economy or the market is headed? We all know that making accurate, short-term forecasts is an extremely difficult thing to do on a consistent basis. In my 30-plus year career there has never been a shortage of opinions available. Still, advisors and their clients want to know if there is a set of facts and logic vs. emotions and speculation driving those conclusions.
What is one interesting fact that no one knows about you?
I'm an absolute basketball junkie. I did an internship with the Detroit Pistons my senior year of college and became General Manager Jack McCloskey's chauffeur and would drive him back and forth to the airport. He had just hired Chuck Daly as head coach which laid the groundwork for back-to-back NBA titles. Sports writers would use interns to gather quotes to use in their articles and it allowed me to briefly talk to future Hall of Famers like Michael, Magic, Kareem, Larry, and Isiah. Having that internship experience on my resume was really helpful in getting hired as a financial advisor right out of college.
What is the best advice you ever received?
You will have a better chance of being personally and professionally successful and happy if you can find a career that allows you to do something you’re passionate about daily. People who really love the activity that feeds their passion and drives their paycheck increase their odds of becoming a star in their chosen profession and feeling like you can say I have never worked a day in my life.
